Painful heartburn and reflux can strike without warning and can occur at the worst possible times (such as the middle of the night when there are no chemists open!). The good news is there are many ways to relieve heartburn and acid reflux at home, naturally.
1. Pineapple Juice
Don’t drink just any fruit juice you have in your fridge, as many juices can make heartburn worse. Pineapple, however, contains an enzyme called ‘bromelain’ which helps to control the acid in your stomach. If you don’t have pineapple juice in the fridge, straining a tin of pineapples and drinking the juice will work just the same!
Bananas are an extremely effective home remedy for heartburn and reflux. Due to the potassium and fibre found in bananas, they work as a natural antacid by reducing acid levels in the stomach. They also contain a number of components that suppress acid production whilst improving the production of mucus to help line the stomach.
3. Baking Soda
Baking soda or ‘sodium bicarbonate’ is a natural antacid. It works quickly to neutralise stomach acid and to relieve the discomfort of heartburn and reflux. Simply dissolve a teaspoon of baking soda into a glass of water for quick relief.
Sage has been used in natural medicine for centuries for a number of digestive issues such as heartburn, bloating, nausea and abdominal pain. Sometimes if we overeat, our food can ‘repeat’ on us in the form of reflux and burping; sage tea or capsules can help alleviate these symptoms.
