Frequently Asked Questions About ASOHM

Who founded ASOHM and when?

The Australian School of Herbal Medicine was founded by Hilde Hemmes, who established Hilde Hemmes' Herbals in Australia in 1985. With a background in herbal medicine from her upbringing in Germany, Hilde recognised that Australians had little access to accurate, practical herbal knowledge — and set out to change that. You can read her full story on the About Our Founder page.

What makes ASOHM different from other herbal medicine courses?

ASOHM was founded by and is taught under the guidance of a practitioner with more than four decades of real-world experience in herbal medicine — not a curriculum written by committee, but knowledge distilled from a lifetime of practice. Our course is also uniquely accessible: self-paced, fully online, and designed for everyday people as well as aspiring practitioners.

How is the ASOHM course structured?

The course comprises 12 lessons, each covering a different aspect of herbal medicine — from the fundamentals of western herbalism through to specific body systems and their herbal treatments. Students can study at their own pace and have up to four years to complete the full course. Lessons can be purchased individually or as packages. See all lesson packages here.

Who is the ASOHM course designed for?

Everyone. I designed this course to be accessible regardless of age, background, or prior education. We have students in their twenties discovering herbs for the first time, retirees who want to deepen a lifelong interest, nurses and allied health professionals expanding their knowledge, and mothers who want to understand natural remedies for their families. All are equally welcome.

Can I receive a certificate on completion?

Yes — upon completing the course, students receive a Certificate in Fundamental Herbology, recognising their study of western herbal medicine through ASOHM.
